November 2024
First grade participates in Citizen Science STEAM project
with Mrs. Deery and Mrs. Xides

WHAT IS STEAM?  STEAM education makes learning “real” and gives students opportunities to see the connection between the content they are studying and the application of that content in authentic and relevant ways. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Technology.

In the Tulip Test Garden, students became Citizen Scientists by planting Red Emperor Tulip bulbs and reporting data to JourneyNorth.org.  Before planting, students walk
through a calendar and discuss signs of the seasons, including one of the first signs of spring - tulips emerging from underground where they've spent the winter.  They learn about the different tools used to measure air temperature and soil temperature, and how a special tool was engineered to dig a perfect hole for a tulip bulb that is 6" deep - the depth a tulip should be planted.  They also used a hand lens to examine the inside of the bulb.

This year, Mrs. Deery led the students in painting what the outside of the bulb looks like, and in painting a dissected bulb so they could see all the parts of the bulb that supports the flower until it blooms.  Every student planted a bulb and will observe their test garden through winter and spring.  They will report when the tulip first emerge, and when it first blooms.  This helps scientists understand seasonal changes and track climate variables.

Students will paint the tulips with Mrs. Deery once they emerge to create a keepsake booklet of their tulip's lifecycle.  Red emperor tulips are easy to find or can be ordered from Netherland Bulbs and you can have your own test garden at home.  More information is at the bottom of this page from when all students planted bulbs in 2020 when school was not in-person.

THANK YOU TO THE OAK GROVE FOUNDATION FOR FUNDING THIS PROJECT!

How to register your tulip bulb

This video walks you through registering for Journey North and
reporting when you plant your bulb:
Go to JourneyNorth.org

Click on "Registration"

Fill out information including "School Name"

Hit "Register

Once you plant your bulb, click on "Sightings"*
Log-in and select "Tulips"
Enter planting location and date

Check "Maps" to see where bulbs have been planted in the US

*When your bulb emerges in the spring, you will also report that date and the date the tulip plant blooms

When to plant your tulip bulb:
Plant when nighttime temperatures have stayed consistently below 60°.
Watch the video of when to plant here
Planting must take place before deep frost hardens the ground. As a rule of thumb, tulips should be planted several weeks before the first hard frost.
