Happy Earth Day!
Big news: Oak Grove has rebooted our school recycling program! In partnership with Dekalb County’s Department of Sanitation, we are able to collect and recycle the following at school:
What can you do at home to help us?
Our kids have become used to throwing everything away at lunch. Please help us as we re-train!
Compost OGE!
Our STEM team is looking to gather a small crew of committed parents to spearhead our cafeteria composting initiative. Each day we send over ten large garbage bags filled with Styrofoam, plastic, and food waste to landfills. Instead we could switch to compostable trays and food waste collection to reduce that amount by 90% - but it will take a group of focused volunteers to make it work. Two other Dekalb County schools have fully functional cafeteria composting programs and we should be the 3rd! Please contact Shaun McCarthy at [email protected] if you’re interested in handing our kids a cleaner planet!

Happy Earth Day!
Big news: Oak Grove has rebooted our school recycling program! In partnership with Dekalb County’s Department of Sanitation, we are able to collect and recycle the following at school:
- aluminum cans
- mixed paper
- packing paper
- shrink wrap
- cardboard
- plastics 1 and 2
What can you do at home to help us?
- Explain that the county’s School Recycling Program is different than the residential program. You can recycle much more in your blue bins at home. You can find a complete list of recyclable items in the residential program at https://www.dekalbcountyga.gov/sanitation/residential-single-stream-recycling-program
- Discuss ways to reduce trash in the cafeteria.
- Go over the list of recyclable items above, and encourage your kids to recycle those items in the big blue container.
- Switch to reusable containers and silverware. Approximately 3% of our kids are waste-free every day.
- If single-use containers are a must for your family, look for plastics 1 and 2, or encourage the kids to bring other plastics home to your blue bin.
- Help your kids locate the recycling triangle on the bottom of plastic container to identify which type of plastic can go in the school bins, and what needs to come home.
Our kids have become used to throwing everything away at lunch. Please help us as we re-train!
